Cracked Lips and Liquid Lipstick... and a product review...

In searching for makeup inspirations on YouTube for my upcoming Halloween costume, I saw a few videos that had "do's and don'ts" of liquid lipstick application... and, yanno, the don'ts ones all looked cracked whereas the do's ones looked super smooth... and I went uh oh. You see, I am madly in love with the metallic liquid lipstick that's quite in right now but the shine is very unforgiving for your lips and any crack will show. One look at this picture from last week on Instagram told me that I needed to watch those videos... STAT!

The lip is super cute... but the cracks apparently don't have to be this apparent. Doh!

Some of the advice on the videos was no brainer stuff like apply a lip primer and line your lips... which I was already doing. So I was not completely devoid of lip skills. I use Prep + Prime Lip by MAC for my lip primer and like it quite a bit. I have a bunch of lip liner pencils from different companies and, in my experience, pretty much any lip liner will work, provided that it's pigmented enough. I tend to gravitate to the ones by MAC. The one from this pic is actually from the Sephora brand, though.

Watching the videos, I noticed that my application of the liquid lipstick itself wasn't up to par. Mostly, it was because, while I generally sweep the wand sideways as they were doing, I wouldn't apply enough pressure. I'm not saying that you need to press super hard on the lips but I noticed that I probably was applying the product too much just on the surface. So I tried re-applying the same liquid lipstick as above but with more pressure to see if that would make a difference and I realized that it actually helped deposit some of the lipstick in the lines, thereby making the lip appear smoother. I took this picture after the re-application. It's subtle but you can see a bit of a difference already (granted, it was a different day).

A habit that I have that was a big no no in this video was that I do tend to press my lips together too soon after applying the liquid lipstick. And I see what the lady is saying and, yeah, I'm trying to correct that tendency but it will take a bit of time.

Another recommendation was of course to exfoliate the lips. I've been using the Lip Scrubtious by MAC in Summer Berry and I like it just okay. I'll likely switch to something else soon. While it does exfoliate, my main issue is that it is more of a mix between a scrub and a lip balm and, as such, I wish that there was more scrubbing power per dab. (I do tend to have very flaky lips at times so I may need something a little scrubbier).

After lips are scrubbed, they are understandably dry and need some moisture back. I have this lip balm with shea butter that seemed to be doing okay... but I was starting to think that it wasn't enough, especially as the season is cooling down and we are dealing with quite a bit of wind around here. The most frequent recommendation to moisturize lips is using Vaseline but I really hate the feel and even more so the taste on my lips so decided to research other options.

I found the Agave Lip Mask by Bite Beauty via Sephora and the reviews seemed interesting enough for me to check it out. I sampled a little bit on my hand and liked the texture enough to give it a try. I have only applied it twice but my lips already feel so much better! It is a little pricey at $26 and you may find the tube really tiny for the price but you don't need to apply much at all on the lips so that little tube will last a long time. But, yes, Vaseline is an option still and much cheaper. So it's up to you. I will say that my lips feel less dry already today even with just the few applications of the lip mask. I had (wrongly) assumed that lips were bound to feel dry with lipstick on.

This picture shows my lipstick with the Agave Lip Mask on. It really helps smooth the lines on the lips and, thus, the liquid lipstick appears smoother. And this is a copper metallic color so it shows all flaws. We still see a bit of lines but I've just begun applying the lip mask and I suspect that it will get increasingly better with added time.








Here's what my (new) routine is around my lips, regardless of whether it's regular lipstick or the liquid formulation:

In the morning:

1. I apply the Agave Lip Mask after having done my facial routine and before applying the face primer. The reason here is to allow some time for the lip mask to be absorbed before applying the lipstick.
2. After all my makeup has been applied, I apply the lip primer all over my lips and a little outside of the lip area. (It helps prevent lipstick bleeding.)
3. If the lipstick is too pale compared to the natural pigmentation of my lips (they are quite pigmented), I will apply concealer all over my lips to mute my lips.*
4. I line the lips with a lip liner pencil.
5. I apply the lipstick.
6. I essentially kiss a tissue or perhaps rather gently pat the tissue to my lips. This helps smooth the lips.
7. I apply a second coat of lipstick.
8. (I sometimes will do another set of smudge/kiss with a tissue and apply a 3rd coat. It depends on how the lipstick looks after the 2nd coat.)
9. I re-line the lips with the lip liner pencil.

* I had applied concealer over my lips for the examples above with the pink metallic lipstick. It was not needed however for the copper lipstick.

It sounds like it's a long process but it really takes only like 2 minutes.

To re-apply during the day:
I personally don't carry the lip mask with me and I often have quite a bit of lipstick left anyway so that would require taking the lipstick off and reapplying... so I just essentially touch up. First, I assess my lips to see if there's any lip liner left on. If there isn't, I line the lips first. If there is or after having re-lined the lips, I apply a coat of lipstick. I will likely do the tissue kissing again to smooth out the lipstick (as some is older and some is newer) and then apply a 2nd coat. I often will re-line the lips afterwards but not always. It depends on what it looks like and, if I'm happy with it, I'll leave good enough alone.

To remove the lipstick:
If, by some miracle, I still have some lipstick when I remove my makeup (it happens more with the MAC liquid lipstick), I simply use eye makeup remover to remove the lipstick. And then I rinse my lips with water. Trying to remove the lipstick by just using a tissue will only smudge it and irritate your lips.
TIP: You want to remove your lipstick before brushing your teeth or else your toothbrush will have some color on the handle.

To condition the lips at night:

1. I apply the scrub over my lips after I've done my whole facial routine.
2. I wipe it off with a tissue.
3. I apply the Agave Lip Mask.

Medusa's Make-Up October Beauty Box

I said that I wasn't going to do it but, for some reason, there was something in the ad for the October monthly subscription that made me resubscribe to the Medusa's Makeup Beauty Box. And I gotta say that I'm glad that I did. This month, we got 4 full size products, one of which is a limited edition color. They said that the retail value was $41 so, for $15.95, that's a pretty good deal. And best of all, I was delighted to see that the products could be turned into a full look.

Here's a pic of what was in the "box". Note also that they have better cards now that explain the products. It used to be a little on the meh side.

That pic is a little small so here was what was included:

• Metal AF Lip Gloss in Kiss Me Deadly
• Witch Lash Mascara
• Glitter in Ziggy
• Eye Dust in Night Owl (this was the limited edition color)

And here is the look that I came up with:

How did I do that?

After having applied my BB cream, concealer, and powder all over my face:

• I applied eye primer (by Too Faced) all over the eyelid to the brow;
• I applied the eye dust on both corners of the eyelid;
• I also applied the eye dust at the lower lash line;
• I applied the Glitter Glue by Too Faced to the middle portion of the eyelid and applied the glitter there; (for more info on how to apply glitter, see this blog entry)
• I didn't like the look of just that stripe of glitter so I added Glitter Glue and glitter all over the eyelid;
• I applied the eye dust at the crease;
• and finally I applied black eyeliner at the top lash line and some mascara.

The lipstick is obviously that Metallic AF lip gloss in Kiss Me Deadly. I also used a Medusa's Makeup blush that I already owned in Dangerous Liaison (a little goes a looooooong way).

Product Review - MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour

I'm not quite sure anymore how I found out about the MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour but, man, am I obsessed with that product now! Why am I obsessed? Because it stays on for HOURS. I often forget to re-apply lipstick so it's perfect for me not to have to worry about that. I also don't like to have a smear of lipstick on my coffee mug and, while some of it will transfer, it's not nearly close to the level that regular lipsticks do. And, for the record, most of my lipsticks are by MAC so it really is a formulation thing, not a brand thing.

The first one that I got was in color High Drama. I just loved the dark color and thought that it might be okay for work but, alas, it IS very high drama so it was too dark, even when I had black hair. And now with the orange hair, it definitely is best for special occasions. You can see me wearing it on this pic with super goth makeup. lol







Because of the incredible hold that the formulation had, I decided to buy 2 more shades: To Matte With Love (bright raspberry) and Back in Vogue (peachy nude). You can see me wearing To Matte With Love in this pic. I love it for when I need a pop of bright color. Another thing that I love about this shade is that, depending on which liner I use, it will slightly affect the color. I love wearing Back in Vogue for a mod look. It's a killer. I don't seem to have pics with it on, sadly.

And finally, the latest color that I picked up was from the new metallic version of the formulation. (It's on a different page, if you're trying to find it on the MAC website.) Metallics are very in right now and I've been somewhat obsessed with getting some nice metallic shade that might work for me. I got the lipcolor in Foiled, which is a nice rose bronze. When I first tried it, it looked off on me but I wasn't wearing any makeup so, yanno, you can't really wear it with a nude face. But, with this green makeup with metallic hues, it is a killer.



Besides loving the stay power and the shades, I have to admit that I also absolutely love the applicator: it makes for easy control in applying the lipcolor, especially around corners, which is usually my demise.

Price-wise, it is $21, which is higher than the regular MAC lipsticks ($17.50) but I believe that the (slight) markup is worth it given the stay power of the formulation. Now, if you're used to lipsticks costing more like $12, then that's a bigger step but, again, it might be worth it. Oh and a little goes a long way. I've used both the To Matt With Love and Back in Vogue quite a bit and it barely looks like any was used... and I apply 3 coats of lipstick (more on that in another blog).

(PS: I'm about to buy yet another one b/c, well, I'm addicted.)

Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette Look

Here's today's makeup, using the Naked Smoky Palette from Urban Decay. When I purchased it, it was on sale at 50% off and is still on sale at the time that I'm writing this. For $27, it's a really really good deal. While the makeup scheme that I did today is on the light side, there is quite a range of smoky looks that you can create with it.

For reference, here is the palette:

So, how did I make this look? On the eyelid, I applied:

• the 2nd color from the left (Dirtysweet) all over the crease;
• the 1st color from the left (High) all over the eyelid;
• the 4th color from the left (Armor) at the outer corner of the eyelid;
• the 3rd color from left (Radar) at the outer corner of the crease to mid-crease;
• the right-most color (Thirteen) at the brow bone.

At the lower eyelid, I applied:

• High all along the lash line;
• Armor, from outer corner to wherever matches (thereabout) on the eyelid;
• Radar as a fine line really on the lash line.

For the eyeliner, I used the E.L.F. cream liner and generally followed the idea below:

The palette comes with a brush and I did not use it for this makeup. I likely will remove it from the palette and throw it in my bin of brushes to be used whenever.

No more monthly makeup subscriptions...

... at least for now.

I haven't been very active on here due to assorted reasons but definitely one of them is that I have fewer products to review now that I no longer do the monthly subscriptions. I enjoyed them. I really did. But there came a time when it seemed like it wasn't such a good idea anymore.

I was drowning in samples. I literally had no place to store them anymore. I mean, within reasons. And the worse part was that it seemed that I never had what I needed: I might have 5 samples of moisturizers but no cleanser (for example). So then I'd have to buy a full size cleanser anyway... and then, of course, I'd finally get a cleanser sampler and then an another and that's how they'd accumulate.

When it came to makeup, it rarely was a shade that would work well for me. Or rather not often enough. And, sure, I can be creative when it comes to makeup but I honestly had so many peach shadows that were about the same shade... or lipsticks in a color that is too close to my actual lips so it looks nude.

So, yes, I've given up on monthly makeup/beauty products subscriptions. Instead, I invest in what I really want. I do miss the excitement of not knowing what will be coming next but it comes at a price... and I put that money towards things I actually need. The only one that is still nagging at me some is Medusa's Makeup's subscription but, again, I'd rather be in charge of deciding which shades to get.

It was great to discover new brands but, you know what, I'm back to using my typical products that I used before.

My skin care regimen is through Estee Lauder. They have a fantastic reward program, actually. Most of my makeup is by MAC, Benefit (mascara and eyebrow products), Too Faced, or Medusa's Makeup.

Product Review - Brow Zings Tame & Shape Kit by Benefit Cosmetics

A few months ago, I purchased the Goof Proof Brow Pencil Easy Shape & Fill by Benefit Cosmetics and wrote a product review about it. While I did love the product and still do, I ran out of the first one I bought rather quickly but I chalked it off to having had issues with the tip breaking up a few times... and I changed my hair color from black to orange so, anyway, I needed to change the color. But the 2nd one also ran out quickly so I figured that perhaps this was not the product for me or I was using too much or something. So I went to Sephora and checked out the other products available by Benefit Cosmetics for eyebrows. I ended up purchasing the Brow Zings Tame & Shape Kit.

 The left side is a wax that you use to fill your eyebrows and shape them. On the right side is a powder that helps set the whole thing. Interestingly, I had chosen the color #3 for the Goof Proof Pencil but that would have been way too dark with the Brow Zings Kit so I went with #2. In fairness to the product, though, my orange is brighter now than when I bought the Goof Proof Pencil so that may be why the color shifted. This is DEFINITELY a benefit of going to Sephora itself to try on things and assess which would work better for you.


The Brow Zings Kit is pricier than the Goof Proof Pencil ($32 and $24, respectively) but I can already tell that the kit will last longer so that's worth it right there.

One thing that I didn't really see while in store were the tools that are included in the kit. The tweezers are really just meh as they are so small. I do have a better pair so I use those instead. But it can be neat to have those in the kit if you're traveling or something. I was disappointed in the brushes when I saw them because they looked so small. Once unfolded, though, they are not so bad at all. The handles are a little thin but that helps with a lighter application so it woks out.




The application is really easy: you sweep some of the waxy color over the eyebrows and give them their shape and then you just apply some of the powder over it to set them. The application of the powder does not seem evident but it does give the eyebrows a little bit of a fuller look.

So I definitely like the product. We'll see how long it lasts. I do think that it will be longer as 1) I won't break any tips and 2) there is quite a bit of product. And, of course, here's a picture of what I look like with it on.

Reversing the process

Earlier this week, I ended up watching a video with dos and don'ts for makeup and, while I generally like the way that I do my makeup and didn't do many of those don'ts, I thought that it was interesting to see that the lady applied the eye shadow at the crease before doing the eyelid... and that she was layering colors at the crease. So I decided to try that for the past couple of days and, you know what?, I actually do like it. Here is what today's makeup looks like.

I ended up layering 3 eye shadows at the crease: a cream color, a sparkly pale brown, and a matte brown. I also layered 3 eye shadows at the lower lash line: the cream color, peachy pink that is also on my eyelid, and the matte brown. I think that it looks more crisp in a way. Hard to describe.

As the author of the video says, if you like the way that you do your eye shadows now, keep on going. But if you're wanting to try something different, consider trying this. It actually did not take much longer than usual as I typically would need to apply the same eye shadow a few times at the crease to get the intensity that I like so, instead, I just applied different colors.

Another advantage that I found by doing the crease first was that my eyelid application was bolder. Normally, it might look a little muted if some of the crease eye shadow overlaps... or I'd need to reapply the eyelid eye shadow anyway to counter that. So that actually worked out great for me.

Product Review - Radiant Creamy Concealer by Nars

About a month ago, I needed to purchase a new concealer as the one that I had been using for a long time was almost all used up (it was by NYX) and, while it had served me well, I wanted to try something different. I did some research and found a number of glowing reviews for the Radiant Creamy Concealer by Nars.

I actually went to Sephora to get the product to make sure that the color was going to work well on my skin as, generally I get the palest color but I sometimes need a touch of pink in it. They have 16 shades to pick from so I definitely wanted to make sure I got the right one.

Right away, when I tried a bit of the product on my under eye area, I could tell that it would be perfect and offer great coverage. (Pro tip: when trying products that go on your face, try them on your actual face instead of your hand or wrist as your skin may have a slight difference in color, enough that it might look off on your face.) And, yes, it has proven to be very effective at covering my dark circles and blemishes.

Because my previous phone had such a crappy camera, I sadly don't have very many pictures to show what my makeup used to look like before. But here's a picture of what it looks now.

When I apply this concealer, I put little dabs under each eye and over any blemish that I need to cover, then, with gentle and light strokes,  I smooth and feather out the concealer on the under eye area. It looks super pale but then I apply powder over it and it smooths out nicely.

The product is a little pricey at $30 for a tube but a little really goes a long way so I dare say that, if you're someone who wears makeup on a regular basis, it is a good investment.

Product Review - Goof Proof Brow Pencil Easy Shape & Fill by Benefit Cosmetics

I went to Sephora on Friday to get mascara and noticed that Benefit Cosmetics now has a line with different products for eyebrows. Let me backtrack for a second.

I naturally have blonde hair so I need to put something over my eyebrows, otherwise it looks like I have no eyebrows. I used to apply black mascara over my eyebrows and then switched to applying gel liner for a more defined look. But the gel liner would be smudgy so I switched back to applying mascara. And then switched recently to using just a dark brown eyeshadow with an angled brush for a more natural look... but it still wasn't hitting the spot.

So I decided to take a chance on the Benefit Cosmetics product, selecting the Goof Proof Brow Pencil Easy Shape & Fill.

I liked the angle of the pencil and that it had a brush at the end and figured that I'd give it a try. Given my black hair, I picked the darkest color, 06. When I tried the product on my hand, it seemed to be a good color for my eyebrows.

I tried it this morning and I have to say that I was impressed and loved the results (shown below). It was actually easy to apply, although I had to put a little more pressure on the pencil than I thought I would have to. But it worked nicely and can be built to your desired intensity. So contrary to any of the other products I had tried before, I could adjust how intense and dark I wanted my eyebrows. After applying the pencil, they recommend using the brush to smooth the product in and that made my eyebrows look more natural.

The products is $24 but I will say that it was well worth the price. I would definitely recommend it. I also love that there are 6 different shades available so you can definitely find something that will work for you, on top of being able to customize the look based on how much you apply.

They also have different versions of the product that have different shape and size of the pencil, depending on the look you like for your eyebrow.

Product Review - Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara by Too Faced

I received a sample of the Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara by Too Faced via a makeup subscriptions.

First off, I generally hate those play on sexy talk as names for makeup and this one takes the cake. Seriously? Better than sex? Pffffff... Okay, I get it, they're bold and believe in their product. I could make a bunch of comparisons that would be highly inappropriate and NSFW but I will refrain.

I have been using the product for about 4-6 weeks. It started out okay: it applied well enough, wasn't clumping, and was a nice intense dark. Probably THE best feature of this product was how well it builds.

Sadly, though, for the last 10 days, it feels like the product has been getting thicker and harder to apply. Reading comments on the Sephora website, it appears that I'm not the only one who had that experience. And, honestly, at $23 for the full size (which is typical for a product in that category), I'd expect for it to last better than that.

It was also very difficult to completely remove the mascara. That is something that usually happens with waterproof mascara, hence why I typically don't buy those, but it seemed like this one was even harder than most.

I wouldn't really recommend this product but I will put a caveat that it might be a case of it's just not for me but others may like it. Again, I feel that it was a product that wonderfully builds so I'd be tempted to purchase it for that, especially for stage performances. I actually might recommend that a casual makeup wearer get the travel/sample version (which is $12) and use it for stage. I might even contemplate doing that myself.

Medusa's Make-Up September Box

My 2nd Medusa's Make-Up box subscription arrived last week. How was it going to compare to last month's box?

Well, here's the loot:

As with the last time, there were 4 items, including this time around:

• Brush cleanser
• Eye dust in lemonade
• Eye shadow brush
• Body shimmer

Not too shabby. I haven't tried the brush cleanser yet and will need to figure out how it compares to my favorite one, which is by MAC. I like the eye shadow brush. The body shimmer is in pink, which is cute, but I'll need to pick and choose where to apply it b/c it IS different than my skin tone... but I can see using it to good effect for stage.

At first, I was a little... hmmmm... dismayed by the yellow of the eye shadow. But, yanno, when your makeup subscription sends you lemonade, you make... an awesome makeup scheme. ;) Here's what I came up with:

I applied a bronze primer, Submissive by Be a Bombshell, over my eyelid. I applied that Lemonade eye dust over the primer. I used the eye dust in Magma from last month's Medusa's Make-Up box at the crease. And a light cream colored eye shadow at the brow bone. (And black eyeliner and mascara, of course.) I'm actually madly in love with this makeup scheme.

I was wondering if I would keep loving this subscription and I sure do. I received my Beautycon Box yesterday (my 3rd one) and, while I like it, I don't love it. (I may do a review of it.) In fact, I went ahead and cancelled it because I would much rather keep having the Medusa's Make-Up subscription. I feel like getting both the Ipsy and Medusa's Make-Up subscriptions complement each other well.

Review - Medusa's Make Up Monthly Box

A couple of weeks ago, I saw that Medusa's Make Up was starting a monthly box subscription and, well, since I love their products (you can read my previous review here), I had to jump at the chance.

I received the products while I was gone on vacation. Funnily, it came in the same pink padded envelope as the Ipsy bag so I thought that it was the Ipsy one. In my fuzzy, jet lagged and sleep deprived state, I didn't clue in for a while and realized that I should have taken pics of all the opening steps. lol So the 2 plastic wrapped things in the picture below were wrapped in some other protecting sheet with a cute sticker to close it.

What I received, from left to right on the above picture are:

• Lip gloss in Loverboy
• Eye glitter in Ozone (which is a lovely pale blue/teal color)
• Eye dust in Magma
• Lipstick in Baroque

I was surprised to see that all 4 products were actually full size. I re-read the description of the subscription box to see if I had just missed it but it just said that you receive 3-5 products to try... I thought they'd be samples. So I got 4 full size products for $15.95. That's pretty darn good. I just checked their retail price for all 4 items and it'd be $35. Granted, you're not choosing the colors but it's a rebate of $20. They're not asking you a quiz about your preferences so they're likely just picking out stuff and shipping that to you. So, funnily, I have an eye dust that is in a similar shade as that Magma, just a bit paler. I do love both, though.

Would I recommend it? Yes I totally would. That was good loot. (I of course reserve the right to change my mind depending on upcoming months.)

The Dita Experience

In April, I saw Strip Strip Hooray (it was wonderful!) and not only did it make me want to bling up all my costumes but I also picked up Dita's new book, Your Beauty Mark, signed, of course. This entry won't be a book review (though I may do one later) as I haven't read it fully yet. However, it is about my experience since the show and starting to read the book.

Before the show, I had noticed that I hadn't been wearing as much makeup as I used to (it partially explains why I've had fewer entries on this blog for a while). Mostly, it was due to time constraints to get out the door in the morning so cutting on makeup application was shaving off some time.

Something else that happened in the meantime is that I've gained back quite a bit of weight between the stress of moving quickly from Indianapolis to Seattle, adjusting to all the new things (new job, new apartment, new city, etc.), and the amazing food here. My confidence has been going down increasingly and it was hard to look at my reflection in the mirror and I felt like a failure given my previous weight loss. So I was feeling pretty low.

Watching the show, seeing gorgeous women of all shapes and size being wonderfully sexy, I had this moment where I leaned over to my partner and said "I think that I need to rekindle my glamorous side." It dawned on me that it would be something that might be helpful. And it sure was.

I started first with wearing more makeup, getting back to the whole routine that I used to do, which involves Beauty Balm instead of foundation, concealer, loose powder, eye shadow application, eye liner, mascara, and blush. Shortly after that, I added wearing lipstick too (which I wouldn't do before), which makes for a more complete look.

When I started reading Dita's book, I was reminded that I also had been neglecting my skin care. I knew it but sort of was ignoring it because the products I normally use are a little pricey. Not outrageously so but more than what my budget could withstand at the moment. But the book reminded me of less expensive options so I slowly added back items to my skin care regime to supplement what I didn't have as samples thanks to Ipsy.

It's been about 6 weeks now and, yes, it does help. I feel better about myself and its much much easier to look at myself in the mirror. My confidence has definitely increased too. It feels like it's totally worth the time and money investments to feel this way.

As for the book, yes, thus far, I would recommend it. The caveat is that, as is to be expected, it's very Dita focused with some of the experts in the book showering her with compliments on her dedication to this or that. So it very much is a celebration of Dita and she explains how she does things but also has some other suggestions. It's definitely not a comprehensive book and never was meant to be. But I find it interesting to hear about her world, her process, etc. And the pictures are gorgeous.

NYX palette

Recently, I wrote a review for the Beautycon box and then a specific one on the Maybelline Rock Nudes palette where I promised that I would write a review of a NYX palette. Yup, this is it.

First off, I have to put the disclaimer that I am rather a fan of NYX. And I'm super glad that Ipsy often has NYX products in their bags. So I was of course delighted when I received this palette with lovely warm neutral tones.

Interestingly, it looks like it might be an Ipsy exclusive, as I don't see a palette that matches exactly on their website. I love the high pigmentation of the NYX products and they are generally not too expensive so it is a very good purchase for the price. I know, though, that it can be hard to find the products depending on where you live but you can order from their website and get free shipping after $25. I have recently purchased from their website and they were fairly quick. They also have more options on their website than what you can find in stores.

Here is how these shadows look on me. And if you want to do a comparison with the previous blog entry with the Maybelling Rock Nudes, you'll see that this below look pops more.

Maybelline Rock Nudes Palette

As I mentioned in an entry last week, I received the Maybelline Rock Nudes palette in the Beautycon Box.

As I mentioned in the previous entry, I was a little disappointed to receive something that can be found at a drug store. It retails for $9.99 at Ulta. I will admit to my bias against drug store products as they generally don't have enough intensity when applied. And, sadly, for all that some of those colors looked pretty intense, they weren't as intense when I applied them.

On my eyelid and crease, I used the last two colors on that top row, with the blue on my eyelid. It's okay but it's not as blue as I had expected it to be. I did apply a primer underneath but I guess it might have needed a further boost from a colored creamy base. It certainly did not look as intense as it does in the ads that I've seen for the palette.

I tested that theory where I did my makeup (using different colors than above) yesterday with just the primer underneath and it looked washed out as above (I forgot to take a picture). I tried again today but with a golden creamy base on the eyelid and it does look better, though it took A LOT of effort to pack the color. I used the middle 2 colors from the top row for the eyelid and crease and the white at the left of the top row on the brow bone.

There are a lot of colors on that palette and the folks at Maybelline decided to help the customer out by putting hints on how to use the colors in a quad, trio, and duo scheme. Great idea. However, you gotta pay attention to the actual numbering, which is in super tiny font. See, the numbers are not always in the same order. The palette was clearly designed to be used in a duo scheme and then someone went "but wait... we can also do trios and quads"... which, anyway, if you are used to makeup application, you can figure out for yourself. And if you're not used to it, the numbering would be confusing, honestly. So A for effort but C on execution.

I also noticed this morning that, for all that there are a lot of colors, there are 3 browns (1 in the top row and 2 in the bottom right) that are either identical or very close to being identical. It's likely that this happened in order to have the different looks but I generally prefer to have all different colors in a palette. The whole point of getting a palette is to have more options.

Would I recommend this product? Not really. Granted, the price is really low but instead of buying that product, invest a bit more on a palette from E.L.F., NYX, or POP. If you use an eye primer and a creamy base, you may be able to get something out of it but it seems to be a lot of work for not enough payoff. Again, sometimes you're better off putting a little more money on makeup to get better results... and use less product... so it ends up pretty much evening out anyway...

Beautycon Box

I had never heard of the the Beautycon Box until it popped in my Facebook feed a few months ago. The cost is $29 for each season or $99 annually. I'm trying to remember but I believe that they charged shipping, which was around $5. They promised that they would have over $130 in items and lots of them would be full size.

So, yanno, I like these boxes so I figured that I'd try it. Here are pictures of what I received.

The picture on the Facebook page shows that there's also a Murad product but I don't think that I received it.

Indeed, a bunch of items were full size. But I was a little disappointed that some of them were pharmacy things like the palette and the makeup remover towelettes. Sadly, the Pacifica lipstick was too much like my natural lip color to really work well for me but it works well as a base for lip glosses. And, well, hair ties are completely pointless for me, given my short hair.

Since I get these kinds of boxes for the thrill of receiving a surprise in the mail, I liked it enough to try it also at least another time.

Product Review - Sexy Booster™ Ooh La La Sexy Eyes Trio by Physician's Formula

I was at Walmart and looking for a liquid liner when I saw this eyeliner trio by Physican's Formula. I thought that it seemed interesting enough for me to try as I generally like the brand. Well, and I have to admit that the super cute packaging got me.

The box promises that you can create 3 different eyeliner looks from this or use all 3 together. I've yet to use all 3 together but I've definitely used 2 at the same time. So what's included?

• On the far left is a thick kohl eyeliner and is my favorite thing in this trio. It really can create a thick line and is relatively easy to work with. 
• The middle one is the liquid liner. It's okay. I was excited b/c it has a felt tip with a ball inside that I thought would help bring more liquid to the felt tip but it's only working so so. I end up having one eye with a very intense black line and the other not so much.
• The third product (on the far right) is a pencil. It's actually pretty good and doesn't require sharpening as it's the twisting kind. I mean, it works well but it's a fairly typical liner.

I enjoy that all 3 items are together in this pouch thing so you can just grab it and all have 3. The price was also rather fair since I paid a little less than $10 at Walmart. Would I purchase it again? I'm not sure. I'd love to purchase just the black kohl eyeliner but it seems that it only comes in a trio (either the one I'm reviewing here or along with 2 other colors). In fact, I ended up purchasing the Jesse's girl liquid liner just last weekend because I find it easier to work with than the liners in this trio (I like to be quick and efficient on weekday mornings). Still, I think that the trio is a pretty good purchase if you want versatility.

Makeup Technique - Smokey Eye Tips

Everyone loves a good smokey eye... and everyone seems to be searching for better ways to do them. Here are some of my thoughts that hopefully will be helpful.

What is it?
First off, what is a smokey eye? Generally speaking, it's a dark eye shadow on the eyelid whereas regular application would be a medium or light shadow. It usually evokes a vamp look. Essentially, your eye will look like there's smoke around it... hence smokey. ;)

Note that, if you're not used to doing this kind of makeup, it might take some getting used to, not so much in how to apply but more in getting used to the look on your face.

Alternative to black
When we say smokey eye, people will generally think of applying black. And while that's a good choice for it, there are other alternatives that may work best, especially if you have pale skin (I know all about that). Really, it just needs to be a darker eye shadow. So consider playing with other colors like dark blue, dark green, dark brown. It will open up a whole new set of possibilities and may actually look better depending on what you are wearing as well as your eye color. For example, I have blue eyes and, when I use a dark blue, it makes my eyes look paler (sort of icy blue) whereas, when I use a dark brown, it makes them look more intense.

If you're going to use black...
If you are going to use black, consider going for anything but a matte finish. The reason for this is that matte will make your eye look like it's receding, especially if you will be using this for a stage makeup under bright spotlights. My favorite black to use for a smokey eye has gold sparkles in it and it makes for a very nice shimmery effect. So it's still undeniably black but has a nice richness to it.

Fallout management
Whenever you apply a dark color all over your eyelid, there will be more fallout than a medium or light color... or so it seems b/c of the intensity of the color. There are several options to take care of this. One way is to wipe the fallout with a soft fluffy brush, using a light touch. DO NOT USE YOUR FINGERS! It would only embed the dark eye shadow more in your skin. Another option is to apply more loose powder after your eye shadow application, which is a similar principle as just wiping it off with the brush. You also can simply apply your foundation after you have done your eyes: it will simply erase any trace of fallout.

Don't forget the brow bone highlight!
Since you will be using such dark eye shadows, definitely remember to apply a pale, shimmery eye shadow at your brow bone to create a nice highlight. It will take your eye from looking closed to opening it back up again. It's like magic!

What about the crease?
That was something that bugged me for a bit: what do you do with the crease? Well, I do either of two things: either I will bring that dark eye shadow in the crease as well, generally using a lighter touch when applying so it sort of feathers out or I will use a medium eye shadow to have a gradient of color. Typically, I do the former if I use black whereas I'll do the latter if I use a different color. But it depends on my mood too. Just experiment and see if you prefer one or the other option.

Eyeliner
I still line the upper and lower eyelids (usually on the waterline for the lower lid) with a black liner, even if I use black. It just makes for a nicer finish as generally the eyeliner will be a more intense black. But you could skip the eyeliner as it's dark enough as it is.

Another option entirely
If you don't like using dark eye shadows on your eyes because you don't like the look or you want to keep your eye looking open, there is another option entirely. One of my favorite makeup looks that looks like a smokey eye and isn't exactly one is the one in the below picture. I applied a silver eye shadow on the eyelid and black at the crease but I made my crease bigger/more prominent than I normally do, which is yielding this smokey eye look (you can see the instructions for this makeup here). Essentially, this could be done with whichever shadow combination you want, just making sure you have a dark shadow at the crease and making said crease more prominent.

Makeup Look - Peacock Eyes

On Saturday, I was feeling like using some blues for my dance makeup for Greek Islands. As promised, here are the instructions on how I achieved the look.

The palette that I used for most of the look is from the Fergie collection by Wet n Wild in Maldives Sky. You can find this at a drug store or Walmart for about $5-6. And, yes, it works great. You can see a review that I had done of a different shade of the palette here.

1. I applied eye primer all over the eyelid to the brow and a little at the lower lash line. I use Shadow Insurance by Too Faced.
2. I applied the top left color from the palette over my eyelid.
3. I applied the bottom left color from the palette on the eyelid, at the outer corner and until about 1/4 of the eyelid towards the inner corner to bolster the color on the eyelid a little.
4. I applied the purple color (so top right on the palette) at the crease, making it darker at the outer crease and less intense as I'm going towards the inner crease.
5. I applied a beige, shimmery eye shadow at the brow bone for a highlight. I used Shroom by MAC.
6. The lower lash line is divided in 3 roughly equal parts and will have different colors. I applied each color from in to out. First, I did the outer corner 3rd with the purple. Second, I did the middle 3rd with the bottom left color. Lastly, I did the inner corner 3rd with the top left color. 
7. I lined both the top eyelid and the bottom waterline with the black gel liner from E.L.F.
8. I applied mascara.

Product Review - Renewing Eye Cream by Nourish Organic

I've been using the Renewing Eye Cream by Nourish Organic for about a month now. The product promises to cool your skin, and reduce puffiness and dark circles... as most eye creams do.

Did it hit the mark for me? Yes and no.

I did feel that it was cooling the skin. In terms of reducing puffiness, honestly, I haven't found a cream that does that better for me than sleep does. As for dark circles, I didn't see much of a difference.

I will have to put a caveat that the sample did not include the applicator that the full size would come with so it perhaps would make a difference. Who knows?

The cost is actually low for an eye cream at $19.99 and is more of the entry level eye cream. At my age, I actually need a bit more oomph and treat fine lines as well so I wouldn't purchase. However, if you don't have the fine lines concern just yet (so are roughly less than 35), you might actually enjoy this cream. I did like the cool feeling on my skin.
